What is the Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme?

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Doreen Lawrence, Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, OBE are working together to broaden access to careers in large commercial law firms and other careers in the City of London. The Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme is designed to address the disproportionate under-representation in large commercial law firms and other City institutions of black men from less socially mobile backgrounds. The scheme is aimed at eligible first year law students at participating universities nationwide, and some other students at a small group of those universities.

Benefits

Scholars will receive the following support:

–A 15-month development programme including skills workshops, interview coaching, support with job applications and careers advice;

–commercial familiarisation during university holidays through work experience;

–an alternative route to interview for a training contract at the firm;

–a £3,500 contribution towards course and associated study-related costs; and

–mentoring.

  • The timing of this support is explained to everyone who is selected for a scholarship. If a scholar is not on a three-year course, we will discuss the most appropriate timing
  • The mix of benefits will be tailored in order to meet the requirements of each scholar’s particular circumstance
