Five-day festival for the Kent Interdisciplinary Centre for Spatial Studies

A five-day festival organised by the Kent Interdisciplinary Centre for Spatial Studies (KISS) begins today with a public lecture and workshop by one of the world’s leading anthropologists, Professor Didier Fassin.

Professor Fassin’s lecture, entitled ‘The Carceral Condition in a Punitive Time’, begins at 3pm in the Templeman Lecture Room.

Other events taking place this week have been organised by KISS in collaboration with Schools across both the Canterbury and Medway campuses. Events include: a training course offering an introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on Wednesday 15 June; an innovative soundwalk, listening event, and film screening on Thursday 16 June at Medway; and a Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) Festival at Canterbury on Friday 17 June.

Members of KISS are drawn from across the faculties at Kent including more than 30 members from Kent Law School. Other Schools involved with KISS include the School of Anthropology and Conservation, Kent School of Architecture, the School of English, the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research, the School of Arts, the School of European Culture and Language, the School of Music and Fine Art, the School of Economics and the School of Politics and International Relations. The main aims of KISS encompass:

Research:

  • To consolidate high-quality, innovative and interdisciplinary world-leading research in spatial studies
  • To expand the range of interdisciplinary collaborative research at Kent by encouraging sharing of expertise around spatial analysis
  • To support research funding applications providing strong interdisciplinary expertise in spatial studies

Teaching:

  • To provide in-house training on methods for spatial research
  • To launch new interdisciplinary PhD programme(s)  and new ‘wild’ modules on spatial studies
  • To enhance employability skills of UG and PG students

Outreach:

  • To support contract research bids to governmental and other agencies
  • To strengthen the University’s links with local / regional institutions
  • To facilitate impact-oriented outreach activities
