Deputy Head of School and Professor of Sustainable Architecture, Marialena Nikolopoulou, gives lecture titled, ‘Performance of buildings: thermal comfort, occupant perception and use of space’ at Universidad de Sevilla on Friday 6 March 2020.
Professor Nikolopoulou will discusse her research looking at the environmental comfort conditions of open spaces in cities. Professor Nikolopoulou writes, ‘Investigating thermal comfort conditions in outdoor urban spaces, has thrown some light on the complexity of the issues involved, demonstrating that a quantitative approach is insufficient in describing comfort conditions outdoors.’
Deputy Head of School, and Professor of Sustainable Architecture, Marialena Nikolopoulou, was recently interviewed by Turkish television channel, TRT World as part of their flagship arts and culture programme ‘Showcase‘, on Monday 17th February to discuss vertical forests. Deputy Head of School, Professor Nikolopoulou and Professor Kolokotroni, Brunel University, presented the Urban Albedo project at a seminar on ‘Urban Design’ at the CIBSE Build2Perform Live 2019 at Olympia in London on Wednesday 27th November 2019. The session ran through how the Urban Albedo collaborative research project is looking at the impacts of the urban fabric to the urban temperatures and how new material can improve urban climate.
The Centre for Architecture and the Sustainable Environment’s (CASE) Dalby Square project was recently featured on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme. The Dalby Square project in Margate is a cross-sector collaboration between Kent County Council (KCC), Thanet District Council, Kent School of Architecture and Planning, the School of Psychology and the private sector. The aim was to develop and retrofit the KCC owned property at 12a Dalby Square into an exemplar residence that simultaneously addresses the challenges of climate change and promotes opportunities for inter-generational living, whilst also ensuring that the existing architectural details of the property are conserved and restored.
“The council wanted to address some of the issues with Dalby Square, and bring it back to its former glory, as part of the wider regeneration of Margate”, says Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou, CASE founder and director of the centre between 2011 and 2018. She also notes that, “If you have an extended family living together they they can afford the house, they’re in a better situation, while also looking after each other. Whether that’s grandparents looking after their grandchildren, or an extended network of siblings.”
CASE worked with architects Lee Evans Partnership to transform the five-story terraced townhouse from former subdivided hotel rooms into a home that enables several generations of the same family to live together under one roof, with both communal and private living areas.
The refurbishment of the heritage townhouse in Dalby Square, Margate, has been completed and a three-generation family are part of the innovative project, where extensive monitoring will take place, to evaluate the climate change adaptation strategies, whilst focusing on overheating, thermal comfort and energy performance, while testing the concept of multi-generation living. CASE aims to develop a ‘Sustainable Heritage Toolkit’ to help other coastal towns across the UK.

Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou recently attended the fifth Asia-Pacific Energy Sustainable Development Forum, for the fifth anniversary celebration event of APSEC, held in Tianjin on 18-20 September. The forum was organised by APEC Sustainable Energy Centre under the guidance of Tianjin University and National Energy Administration China.
Professor Nikolopoulou presented the recent work on the Urban Albedo project, with a talk titled, ‘Developing an urban albedo calculator: an empirical model to predict changes in relation to urban fabric and solar altitude in London’. Urban albedo, the capacity of urban surfaces to reflect solar radiation, is one of the most important contributors to changes in outdoor temperature, intensifying the urban heat island phenomenon, where temperatures in urban centres are higher than the surrounding rural environs.
In addition to attending the conference in Tianjin, Professor Nikolopoulou also represented the University of Kent at the EIC Fair in Tianjin, and visited schools and agents in Beijing as part of her trip to China.
The International Seminar on Courtyard Performance and Thermal Modeling at the University of Seville focused on the results from a recent project on the environmental performance of courtyards, involving detailed monitoring, mathematical modelling, dynamic thermal simulations and energy analysis. The seminar, which was held at the School of Architecture of Seville, involved collaborations with researchers from the groups of Thermal Technology, Mathematical Modeling, and Simulation of Environmental Systems, Material Technology and Building Systems, as well as the Universities of Cadiz, Harvard and Kent.
Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou, Deputy Head of School, and founder of the Centre of Architecture and Sustainable Environment, gave a keynote presentation, in what marked the beginning of a new collaboration with Kent School of Architecture and Planning in the context of a new project on the role of courtyards in contemporary architecture.
Deputy Head of School, Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou, features in a recent article in the CIBSE Journal, ‘Prime example – How industry can promote diversity in engineering‘. Following the recent appointment of the first female CIBSE President, reporter Liza Young looks into diversity and equality, and female role models within engineering organisations.
Professor Nikolopoulou was Director of Research and Director of CASE (Centre for Architecture and the Sustainable Environment) until recently, and is also the MSc Architecture and Sustainable Environment programme director.
Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou gave a keynote speech at the launch of the First International Conference on Landscape Architecture and Microclimate ever held, at Tongji University, in Shanghai, China, on 26-28th January 2018.
The conference marked the completion of the key research project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China “Research on design theory and method of landscape architecture response to microclimate suitability in urban livable environment”, unique in bridging the discipline of landscape architecture with microclimate studies. The conference was a big success with 210 participants from 76 universities and various professional associations.
Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou will be talking about her leading research on human thermal perception and climate adaptation in cities in a talk entitled ‘Open spaces in the 21st century city: from the thermal dimension of space to climate change’ as Visiting Professor at Wageningen University, in the Netherlands, funded by the Wageningen Institute for Environment and Climate Research on Tuesday 28th November 2017.

Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou, Director of CASE (Centre for Architecture and the Sustainable Environment), has been invited to the 3rd Royal Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering for Development symposium “Sustainable Global Wellbeing”, to co-chair the session on “Innovation for Sustainable Development” along with the Director of the UK Energy Research Centre.
The interdisciplinary workshop aims to encourage collaborative work, promoting international development, and cross disciplinary thinking among the next generation of leaders in engineering. In order to help cement new collaborations, groups of participants are invited to apply for seed funding of £20,000 to help develop a new collaborative partnership. The symposium is taking place at the Oxford Union, from Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 September 2017.
