The University of Kent staff team have got off to winning ways with a 5-1 victory in a friendly fixture against student team Average Old Boys, who play in the Kent Amateur Football league.
The team started well and their performance was rewarded with an early goal from Charlie Dast. Average Old Boys quickly responded with a great header from Tom Wood to make it 1-1. However, another goal from Charlie Dast and goals from Kevin Doyle, Guillermo Reyes Pascual and Matt Brears saw the team walk away with a comfortable 5-1 victory.
The friendly was a great opportunity for the team to practise formations and tactics ahead of their competitive fixtures of the inaugural Kent FA Community Cup, a county wide tournament hosted by Kent FA. The tournament is open to organisations and businesses across the county, providing opportunities for players to participate in a competitive but enjoyable atmosphere.
Other teams entered into the Cup include: Kent Country Council, Kent Community Health NHS and Kent FA.
‘The Kent FA Community Cup is a great opportunity for staff members from across the University to play 11 a-side football in a competitive but enjoyable format and to put into practise the hours spent playing at our casual small sided staff football sessions throughout the week. It has been a pleasure to be part of the organisation of the team and the team and I are very much looking forward to our first competitive fixture.’ – Billy Radford, Sports Development Officer for Kent Sport.
The University of Kent players are from departments all across campus with wide ranging jobs including a Reader in Astronomy and Astrophysics, a Business Development Manager, a Buddhist Chaplain, a Professor of Psychology and an Innovation Assistant. What they all share is a great passion for football and have been training hard ready for the big game.
Details of the team’s first competitive fixture will be released shortly.
