Kent Sport facility developments 2019-20

Kent Sport is committed to an ongoing programme of facility maintenance and development to ensure we provide the best possible experience to our members. Over the last year we have been busy progressing and completing a variety of exciting projects including the following.

Indoor Tennis and Events Arena

The construction of a new Tennis and Events Arena, due for completion autumn 2020, will provide the University with four indoor tennis and netball courts for year-round use. See the Indoor Tennis and Events Arena news item.

Martial arts area

The completion of a new multi-use sports facility. This area used to be an out of commission squash court which is now fully renovated and padded out with mats and includes inspiring artwork resulting from our staff and student Design Our Space competition. Usage of the area includes for martial art training such as judo, karate, jiu jitsu and taekwondo as well as boxing and other activities.

McGuigan Gym

McGuigan Gym moved to Kent Sport in August 2019. We are proud to be able to attract elite athletes to the University of Kent and work with them to raise the profile of the University and inspire and benefit the students. We converted a second out-of-commission squash court into a first-rate training area for the boxers which is proving invaluable to their success on the international stage.

Boxing area

We have also renovated the Hall 2 balcony, which is now another ideal area for martial arts training and the student boxing club in particular.

Gym flooring

In the fitness suite we have replaced the lower level floor across the free weights and wellness areas, including in The Pit. Due to the stresses of weights dropped on the floor it had begun to crack crumble and we have replaced it with higher grade flooring for improved longevity. The wellness area in the fitness suite has also seen the addition of a slam wall to enable gym goers to throw medicine balls against the wall for another great workout option.

Gender neutral facilities

We have also added gender neutral changing rooms to the Sports Centre as we aspire to being a fully inclusive sport and fitness facility. This is part of our drive to become a fully inclusive facility. Please see our Inclusive Fitness webpage for more details.

Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic

The Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic received a new look with graphics installed on the treatment bay windows to reflect its new brand.
