Staff Varsity 2026 Cricket Review

Staff Varsity 2026 began with a closely contested cricket match at Polo Farm.

With glorious sunshine and temperatures hovering in the early 20s, it was a perfect evening for cricket. The University of Kent team featured staff from departments across the university. With a blend of experienced club cricketers and players newer to the game, it created a fun and social team environment.

After winning the toss, University of Kent Staff captain Nafis Sadik elected to field. CCCU got off to a strong start with a formidable opening partnership, as Alex launched a couple of big sixes into the trees before eventually retiring on 50. However, Kent showed great spirit and determination to fight their way back into the contest. Alan and Nat bowled some tricky spin during the middle overs to slow the run rate, with Nat eventually claiming the breakthrough with an important wicket. Fast bowler James also picked up a wicket after a brilliant catch by Joel. A run out accounted for CCCU’s third wicket, and the batting side eventually finished their innings on an impressive 197.

Faced with a big run chase, Kent aimed to start their innings positively. They got off to an impressive start as Lawrie struck a quick-fire 50 with some excellent shots. Lee chipped in with some important runs as part of a valuable opening partnership. On debut, Tushar played a composed innings in the middle overs, while Nafis contributed a fine counter-attacking knock. James hit a flurry of boundaries in the closing overs, but unfortunately Kent finished 31 runs short of the target, ending their innings on 166–7.

Overall, it was an enjoyable evening. It was great to see Ferdous and Joel play their first-ever hard-ball cricket match, while Jack and Tushar made their Kent debuts. That is what Staff Varsity is all about!
