Tuesday 7 October welcomed the first in a series of sporting lectures hosted collaboratively between the department of Sports and Exercise Science, the Enrolment Management Service team and Kent Sport.
The lectures were set up as part of Kent Sport’s 50:50 project which is coordinating 50 events and activities to help celebrate the University’s 50th anniversary year.
The Introduction to Sports Science lecture was presented by Dr John Dickinson, who teaches exercise and physiology modules and runs the Respiratory Clinic at the University’s Medway campus.
John talked about the role Sports Science can play in helping to improve sports performance and identified specific components such as physiology, biomechanics and psychology.
The lecture was attended by 24 students, all from local schools, with the focus being to improve their knowledge of the subject. In turn, they hope to inspire future athletes, coaches or sports scientists.
Jen Wilson, Head of Elite Development at King’s School Canterbury and player-Coach of Canterbury Ladies Hockey Club said: “The Introduction to Sport Science workshop was interesting and informative. It gave our pupils insight into sports science elements which are used to support and develop elite athletes. Key to the success of the workshop was its interactiveness with support of visual aids for the pupils.”
The next lecture is scheduled for Tuesday 4 November and will be given by Dr Carla Meijen on our Medway campus. Carla will be looking at the affect psychology can play in sport and how helping athletes to understand the pressures involved with their sport can help to improve performance.
