Embarking on an MBA is a big step, which is why doing your homework about which is the best course for you and where to study is paramount. Recently, we talked to Dr Thet Htar Nyein from Myanmar – who has just finished her MBA having submitted her dissertation last month – about her MBA experience at Kent.

What did you want to achieve from the MBA when you applied to Kent?

When I first embarked on the MBA journey, my primary goal was to acquire advanced business knowledge and skills that would enable me to transition from a background in healthcare to a more comprehensive role in healthcare management. I sought to strengthen my leadership abilities, understand the intricacies of strategic decision-making, and develop a more global perspective on business practices.

I was also looking for a platform to enhance my confidence in navigating complex business challenges, particularly in a rapidly evolving sector like healthcare. Ultimately, I wanted to merge my experience in healthcare with business acumen to drive impactful initiatives and lead organisations towards sustainable growth.

Do you still have the same aims and goals? If not, what are they now?

While the core of my aims has remained consistent, my vision has become clearer and more focused. Initially, I was open to a wide range of opportunities but, through the MBA journey, I discovered my true passion lies in the intersection of healthcare services management and social entrepreneurship. I now aspire to lead within healthcare organisations, focusing on creating sustainable and patient-centred strategies. My goal is to develop innovative solutions that can enhance healthcare delivery, especially for underserved communities. The MBA solidified my belief that my work can align with my values — focusing not only on profitability but also on contributing to societal well-being.

How did the MBA help you personally? And professionally?

Personally, the MBA was transformative. It helped me grow in confidence, resilience, and adaptability. Living and studying in a foreign country, surrounded by a diverse cohort, taught me the importance of cultural awareness and cross-cultural collaboration. I also gained critical self-awareness through reflective practices, allowing me to identify my strengths and areas for growth, particularly in assertiveness and decision-making.

Professionally, the MBA was invaluable in equipping me with the tools to lead strategically. It provided me with a deep understanding of business operations, leadership theory, and financial management. The programme helped me transition from a clinical and operational role in healthcare to a more holistic understanding of business management. I now feel confident in making data-driven decisions, developing marketing strategies, and managing financial and operational challenges in healthcare settings.

What were your highlights? And low lights?

The highlights of my MBA journey are numerous. One of the standout experiences was the International Consultancy Challenge in Greece, where my team worked on a real-life consultancy project for an NGO focused on food waste management. It was incredibly fulfilling to contribute to an organisation making a tangible social impact. Another highlight was building lifelong friendships with my classmates and exchanging diverse perspectives from across the globe. The supportive environment fostered collaboration, and I learned as much from my peers as I did from the coursework.

On the other hand, the lowlights were more about personal challenges. The pressure of balancing assignments, deadlines, and living alone in a foreign country was sometimes overwhelming. One of the toughest moments was when I performed below my expectations in a module I was particularly passionate about. However, that experience taught me the importance of resilience, self-discipline, and the ability to learn from setbacks.

What are your general thoughts on the MBA? And would you recommend it to someone else?

The MBA at Kent Business School has been an incredible journey — academically, professionally, and personally. It was the right decision for me, as it not only broadened my business knowledge but also sharpened my leadership skills and clarified my career direction. The curriculum, paired with hands-on projects, international exposure, and critical reflection, has truly prepared me for the challenges ahead.
