Winning Ways for Kent Business School MBA Student

It was an award-winning end to 2017 for part-time MBA student, Will Scobie (holding trophy), who achieved global recognition with an award for international crisis management work at the CIR Magazine Risk Management Awards, which took place at the Millennium Hotel in London’s prestigious Mayfair.

Will is studying for his MBA whilst also performing the role of General Manager for Horizonscan, a business continuity and crisis management consultancy based at Discovery Park in Sandwich, Kent. The company won the prestigious International Risk Management award, sponsored by CIR (Continuity Insurance and Risk) Magazine, for its work with a multi-national company stress testing its responses to crises.

Horizonscan stood out to the judges thanks to the special focus that was given to the way in which differences in cultures, languages and local environments are addressed to create a more successful outcome. Since the stress-test simulation training programme started, Horizonscan’s client experienced a number of incidents at sites that had recently undertaken ‘immersive coaching’. Testimonies from management at these sites was clear: “our recovery performance was significantly better due to the programme”.

In picking up the award, Horizonscan overcame competition from international heavyweights in risk management such as Reliance General Insurance and the Arab National Bank.

Will, who was appointed as General Manager only a year ago, was accompanied in accepting the award by CEO, Russ Timpson and alludes to his MBA studies as being immediately relevant to his job role. He said:

“Last year we did our module on accounting and finance, then a couple of weeks later I was presenting our balance sheets and profit and loss accounts to the directors. After we learnt about bonus schemes, I implemented one at work. When I learn something that I can implement within Horizonscan I go ahead and put it into action – it’s pretty incredible!

“Our CEO, Russ, says it’s the best investment in the business he’s ever made, and now with this award we have proven – on a global playing field – that the investment is paying off.”

Congratulations to Will and the entire Horizonscan team on the award. Find out more about our MBA and study at a top 20 UK business school.
