Kent Business School’s Senior Lecture in Marketing Dr Xuemei Bian has attended a research workshop hosted by the UK Intellectual Property Office.

Selected due to her expertise in the understanding of counterfeit-related behavior, the platform brought together leading experts from across the EU to deter the production and consumption of counterfeit goods, including the Director of Alliance and the Economic Advisor for the Intellectual Property Office as well as the Senior Economist for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Discussion points included how the loss in consumer welfare from the purchase of counterfeit goods can be measured, the substitution rates between a counterfeit and a genuine product, and the impact that counterfeit products have on UK jobs.

As well as this the panel of experts analysed the short-term and long-term impacts of counterfeit production as well as identifying where further data is needed.

‘Attending this workshop was beneficial as it helped to reshape my future research directions and it also represents a great opportunity for building a network outside of academia.’ – Dr Xuemei Bian
