  1. 2.    JOB PURPOSE
Reporting to the Hornby Development Manager to research and make available all of the information relating to the full-size subject matter that is required by the Hornby Development and Marketing Teams in order to bring new products to market.Specific projects will be designated to the job-holder in order to follow agreed development schedules.
  1. 3.    MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
This job description aims to give a broad outline as to the requirements of the role.  Where jobs have more than one post holder, there may be variations in accountabilities.  Management may ask employees to undertake reasonable additional duties to those outlined, based on the post holder’s personal skills, experience and developmental needs.  Where there are no specific references to health and safety accountabilities, employees are reminded of their statutory duty to protect their own and other people’s health, safety and welfare at all times.

  • To locate, obtain and collate all of the information required by the Development Team designers to design new products to the highest possible standards of accuracy and detail.
  • To locate existing examples of new product subjects and arrange visits for the team designers to view, photograph and measure them.
  • To find and liaise with acknowledged experts for each subject.
  • To research and propose suitable colour schemes and markings for new products.
  • To supply colour scheme and markings information to internal and external artwork suppliers.
  • To liaise with and review the work of internal and external artwork suppliers to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
  • To research and supply product history text for use on packaging and instructions artwork and for use in catalogues web sites.
  • To help review design projects at various stages of completion.
  • To review and comment on pre-production and pre-shipment samples of new products and liaise directly with our Hong Kong office to get corrections made by our Chinese suppliers for Aviation Archive products.
  • To use knowledge of full-size locomotives and knowledge of the modelling and die-cast collector markets to put forward proposals for future new products to the Development and Marketing managers.
  • To monitor internet forums and collate and present information regarding customer requests for new product choices and comments on recent product releases.
  • To research and understand our competitor’s products and product ranges and how they compare and relate to our own
  • To supply facts and data to Customer Care to enable then to answer enquiries from customers.
  • To liaise with and supply information and images to the Hornby marketing team to assist them to create catalogues, publicity materials, exhibitions, websites and social media.
  • To develop good working relationships both within the Hornby development and marketing teams and also more widely in the development and marketing departments in order to maximise the exchange of creative ideas and working techniques.
  • To prepare and give talks and presentations to various modelling clubs and societies on the history of Hornby and how new products are developed
  1. 4.    LEVEL OF AUTONOMY AND DECISION-MAKING
 Regular input will be needed for decisions from the Airfix Development Manager to support each new product development project. Regular presentations of progress at key points in the research and development process will be expected.
