Kent vs CCCU staff varsity football

On Tuesday 9 May, University of Kent staff members lined up for their annual varsity match against Canterbury Christ Church staff, hot off a 2-1 victory last time the two sides met. Kent started strongly when a shot from 20 yards out almost found the bottom corner. However, Christ Church began to gather momentum with two dangerous counter-attack moves that eventually came to nothing.

Minutes later, Christ Church were ahead with a lovely curling effort which beat the Kent keeper to send the away team ahead. This followed with another move on the break which the Kent defence failed to deal with, leaving them two goals behind with just over 25 minutes gone. However, Kent began to find their stride with some nice moves and with ten minutes to go in the first half, a lovely weighted ball by Billy Radford, Sports Development Officer, was played through to David Burt, Let’s Play Coordinator, who coolly slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

However momentum changed one more time in the dying minutes of the first half when Kent were undone with a flowing counter attack from the opposition team to leave the home team trailing once again by two goals.

The second half started with more energy from the home side who understood that form had to be improved if they were to get anything out of this game. This soon turned to frustration once more when the home side were undone with a counter attacking move which saw Kent go three goals behind just shortly after half time. Kent battled throughout the half, dominating play which was rewarded with a lovely worked goal by Josh Breese, Let’s Play ambassador, who hammered the ball into the top right hand corner.

The game finished 4-2 to Christchurch.
