The National Trust at  Bodiam Castle  are looking to recruit a couple of Kent students to participate in, or simply attend on a short term basis, the Bodiam Castle Advisory Committee.

The committee was originally set up as part of Lord Curzon’s gift to the National Trust in 1926, to ensure that the Castle was looked after ‘by learned people’ in perpetuity. The committee is there to help the National trust protect Lord Curzon’s gift to the nation and are very keen to recruit informed representatives of the younger generation to it.

Bodiam is a fascinating site, which, as well as being a fourteenth-century moated castle, includes within its landscape evidence of a key Neolithic, then Roman, then Medieval, cross roads; a Roman Fort; and evidence of medieval fish and Mill ponds. It’s wharf area was once a thriving port and it is still possible to travel by boat to Bodiam Castle.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for one or two interested students to enrich their knowledge and understanding of how museums or heritage bodies work. Sitting on the Bodiam Advisory Committee means having a role in decision making about the Castle going forward and also experiencing first hand how the National Trust works with such inherited bodies. Bodiam’s General Manager of Portfolio is always on the committee and senior members of Bodiam staff regularly attend to give presentations and updates.

Any student interested in a future within museums or heritage will gain enormous insights into the way heritage charities work with trustees and similar bodies. You will gain first-hand understanding of the pressures to conserve and protect the built and landscape environments, whilst also raising necessary funds to carry out such work.

Practical Conservation Volunteer Internships 2018-19

The reserves

RSPB Blean Woods and Seasalter Levels nature reserves comprise over 750 hectares of SSSI habitat on the outskirts of Canterbury and Whitstable in East Kent.

Blean Woods is a fascinating semi-natural, ancient woodland with areas of high forest, coppice, glades and heathland, linked together by an extensive ride network. The reserve is home to the nationally scarce heath fritillary butterfly as well as rare birds including, nightingale, lesser spotted woodpecker and nightjar.

Seasalter Levels is an extensive wet grassland and represents an exciting new project in its development stage. The reserve hosts breeding birds such as lapwing and redshank, as well as harvest mice and many dragonfly species.

Practical Conservation Volunteer Internships

Why?: This internship is ideal for those looking to start a career in the conservation sector. It’s an excellent way to get practical, hands-on experience in managing land for the benefit of wildlife whilst working for the UK’s largest nature conservation charity.

What do you get?: Working closely with the reserve warden team you will help deliver the winter work programme where you will develop leadership skills by running volunteer work parties. You will receive in-house training, including machinery use, and also participate in ecological survey work. You will have a dedicated mentor who will help develop your skill set and support you in application writing and interview practice.

Commitment: The internship is a flexible programme. As it is a part-time, 3 days a week commitment it enables participants to maintain part-time employment.

Travel expenses: covered within a 25 mile radius of sites.

Dates: mid-August 2018 – 1^st March 2019

Wildlife Sense presentation

SAC’s Conservation Society will be hosting a session with Wildlife Sense, a science-based conservation project to protect sea turtles and their habitats. Volunteers from around the world join Wildlife Sense each summer to help survey nesting beaches and protect sea turtle nests, research their behaviour in the wild, and raise public awareness.

 Smart Eco City: Canterbury 2050

Volunteers needed to help at this special one-day workshop.

Volunteer opportunities include: assistant producers, photographers, film crew, event technicians and digital editing assistants

This event will bring together multi-disciplinary representatives from the public and private sector with academics from the Universities of Kent, UEA and Essex to share new developments, research and best practice in the Smart City and Eco City space.

Bakerwell is a leading ecological consultancy in the South East. They are offering a paid, 10 week internship for a Kent student who is studying  an ecology, conservation or environmental degree.

Dates are to be confirmed, but the internship will take place between June and September.

If you would like the opportunity to undertake ecological surveys focused on local wildlife in Kent and Sussex then keep earning those Employability Points for the chance to apply!

Opportunity details: The chance to undertake ecological surveys, report writing and plan production (using QGIS) focused on Kent-based wildlife, including various protected species.

Company profile: Bakerwell provide ecological surveys on local wildlife in Kent and Sussex.

Location: Office work to be undertaken in either Ashford or Folkestone, and field work throughout Kent.

Date(s): Dates to be confirmed between student and sponsor. Work to be undertaken between June – September 2018. The internship is for 10 weeks.

Additional criteria: The student must be studying an ecology, conservation or environmental degree. Some surveys will be undertaken outside or normal working hours. For this reason, access to a car would be beneficial, but if needed, car sharing will be possible. Relevant legislation and GIS experience would be beneficial but if needed, training will be provided. For field work only, travel will be reimbursed (0.45p per mile).

Chinese Government Scholarships

The scholarships cover tuition fees, university dormitory or accommodation subsidy, a monthly stipend, and medical insurance.

In order to promote the mutual understanding, co-operation, and exchanges in politics, economy, culture, education, and trade between the People’s Republic of China and the United Kingdom, the Chinese Government is offering the Chinese Government Scholarship to non-Chinese citizens.

The Chinese Government Scholarship is administered by the China Scholarship Council in association with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the UK.

The Scholarship provides an opportunity for both undergraduate and postgraduate students to spend the 2018-19 academic year studying at a Chinese higher education institution.

How to apply

Step One

Complete the University of Kent’s Chinese Government Scholarship application form and submit it via email to the Scholarships Unit by Wednesday 14 February 2018. On the form you will be asked to:

1. Provide a statement to explain how you would benefit from (a) studying in China and (b) from the scholarship.
2. Provide the names of your first, second and third choices of host institutions in China.

Step Two

The applications will be assessed by a University of Kent panel to decide which applicants the University will nominate to be considered for the Scholarship.

The applicants who have been nominated will be notified by the University and will then make their application for the Chinese Government Scholarship. Full information on how to make this application will be provided at this stage.

Please note that a nomination does not guarantee that the applicant will be awarded the scholarship – this decision is made by the China Scholarship Council.

The China Scholarship Council will inform successful applicants by the end of March 2018.
