MEMS MA Trip – Westminster Abbey and British Library

As part of their studies in the MA Medieval and Early Modern Studies programme, a group of students recently undertook a valuable research visit to two of London’s most important historical institutions: the British Library and Westminster Abbey.

The day began at the British Library, where students registered for Reader Passes, an essential step in gaining access to one of the world’s most significant research collections. The visit introduced students to the Library’s facilities and resources, helping them prepare for future independent research using manuscripts, rare books, and archival materials relevant to their coursework and dissertations.

In the afternoon, the group visited Westminster Abbey to explore its remarkable collection of muniments and monuments. Students had the opportunity to examine historical documents preserved by the Abbey and to study a selection of medieval and early modern tombs. These monuments provided a fascinating insight into commemoration, patronage, religious culture, and political power across several centuries.

The visit offered an excellent opportunity to engage directly with primary sources and material culture beyond the classroom. By encountering the documents, spaces, and memorials that form the basis of historical research, students gained a deeper appreciation of the methods and challenges involved in studying the medieval and early modern past.
