Trio of Kent law students wow judges on ITV’s The Voice

A trio of Kent law students wowed three out of four judges on ITV’s The Voice when they performed their cover of Stormzy’s ‘Blinded by your Grace’ in the blind auditions.

Gabrielle Danso, Shalom Ozua and Yolanda Pikitayi are all final-year Law LLB students at Kent Law School. As gospel group, Equip to Overcome, their singing talents attracted the attention of The Voice judges Jennifer Hudson, Tom Jones and will.i.am during week five of the show. But they failed to win over the fourth judge, Olly Murs.

Shalom said the experience was surreal: ‘We never thought that we would be on this platform, and the fact that Tom and the coaches believed in us and saw something special and potential in us has helped our drive for being in the music industry, and to want to do more.’

The girls first formed their group two years ago when they met at Kent. Shalom said: ‘After spending time together and realising our passion and how musically connected we were, the group was born.’

The group rehearse two or three times a week and are setting their sights on a career in the music industry: ‘We live and breathe music, music is us!’

But their Law School experience at Kent is definitely helping. Shalom said: ‘Our experience of studying law has helped us cope with pressure and we have been able to use that to cope with the demands of taking part in The Voice.’
