Five law students shortlisted for 2018 Kent Student Awards

Five students from Kent Law School have been shortlisted for the 2018 Kent Student Awards which celebrate outstanding contributions to the Kent student experience.

  • Outstanding contribution to the local community: Final-year law student Phoebe Lionakis has been shortlisted for selflessly volunteering her time to support victims of serious crimes and their families in court
  • Outstanding Contribution to Sports Development: Third-year Law and Accounting and Finance student Rebekah Wilinsky has been shortlisted for teaching disadvantaged children to swim, fundraising for charity and raising awareness of the importance of sports for children
  • Outstanding International/Multicultural Initiative of the Year: Final-year law student Rhianna Melvin has been shortlisted for supporting the links between the University of Kent Law Clinic and the University of Makeni Law Clinic in Sierra Leone, facilitating an exchange programme and fundraising for resources for those students
  • Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity: Phoebe Lionakis has also been shortlisted for founding the UKC Student Minds Community Action Group, a student group dedicated to eradicating the stigma around mental health and mental illness. And final-year law student Valiant Dorian has also been shortlisted in this category for his excellent work as the Kent Union LGBT+ Trans Officer this year, organising key events such as a ‘Fit for LGBT + Trans Swimming’ event and contributing to the University’s new trans policy
  • Outstanding Contribution to Academic Communities: Postgraduate law student Hazel Lincy Ebenezer, who is studying an LLM (Master’s in Law) in Human Rights Law at the Brussels School of International Studies, is shortlisted for setting up the Human Rights Society at the Brussels centre, running workshops and events to help students develop career skills, learn more about the subject and build communities.

More than 250 nominations were received for the annual awards. The winning students will be announced at the gala dinner on Friday 1 June.

The winner in each category will receive their very own brick in the University’s ‘Footsteps Path’, a certificate and their achievement will be recognised on their Higher Education Achievement Report when they graduate.
