Kent team’s abseil brings charity total to more than £1,500

Kent staff and students leapt off a building in Maidstone on Sunday to raise more than £565 in a charity abseil for Canterbury Housing Advice Centre (CHAC).

The Kent Law School team, Abseil-lutely Bonkers, abseiled 135 feet down Miller House with the KM Charity Team.

It brings the total amount of money raised for CHAC by staff and students at the School to more than £1,500 in the last four months; a craft sale in December raised £850 and a cake sale earlier this month raised more than £125.

The intrepid team included Head of School Professor Didi Herman, Senior Law Lecturer Dr Karen Devine, Assistant Lecturer Janie Clement-Walker, Office Manager’s Assistant Amy Parkes and first year Kent Film student Amy Brown.

Professor Herman said: ‘It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. We all felt scared but now we’ve done it, I can actually see the potential for abseiling to be fun!’

Jill White, a member of CHAC’s Fundraising Committee, said: ‘I am so grateful to the team from Kent Law School for taking part in the abseiling event and raising funds for CHAC. CHAC needs every penny it can get in order to stay open beyond April 2016. I can’t bear to think what would happen to all those vulnerable people if it could no longer provide this essential service. A massive thank you from the staff and management committee at CHAC!’

Canterbury based charity CHAC, is chaired by Nick Jackson, a Senior Law Lecturer at the School. Founded in 1991, CHAC works to prevent homelessness in Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay. Specialist caseworkers support people at risk of eviction or repossession. They offer advice on mortgage arrears, tenancy rights and housing benefit.

In April last year, the charity suffered major funding cuts and urgently needs to raise more than £40,000 in 2015 to continue meeting demand for its services.

It’s not too late to help the Abseil-lutely Bonkers team in their efforts to support CHAC; visit their JustGiving page at: www.justgiving.com/chacabseil or text ‘CHAC88 £2′ to 70070 to make a £2 donation.
