Kent LLM students present their research at annual conference

Postgraduate students enjoyed a valuable opportunity to present and discuss their research at the second annual Kent Law School LLM Research Conference earlier this month.

Among those selected to present at the Conference were 10 Kent LLMstudents and two visiting PhD students from University College Cork. Presenters were able to receive insightful and immediate feedback from Kent PhD students, academic staff and fellow LLM students in the lively and analytical discussions that formed an integral part of the day.

The event, organised by students, offered a forum for both formal and informal discussions, enabling attendees to network and exchange ideas on contemporary legal issues.

The range of research topics presented was broad and innovative with subjects drawn from the fields of criminal and public international law, international and commercial law, international commercial and corporate law, and human rights and democratic governance. Indre Dapkeviciute, an LLM student in International Commercial Law who helped organise the event in her role as Programme and Publications Coordinator and who also presented a paper on corruption, said: ‘The conference was an engaging, intriguing and inspiring event. It went extraordinarily smoothly due to the teamwork of the committee, support from academic staff and a great deal of help from the postgraduate office.

‘The selected students had an invaluable opportunity to present and have their research scrutinised by top academics; an opportunity many postgraduates do not have. It was delightful to see so many students and academics from different fields attending on the day.’

Professor Amanda Perry-Kessaris said: ‘It was an impeccably organised, elegant, engaging and intellectually stimulating day. Congratulations to the organising committee, who worked so hard, and to the presenters and discussants, who prepared so well. Many thanks to the Kent Law School postgraduate office team who, as ever, went that extra mile in support of students, and to academic colleagues who chaired sessions and attended the event.’

The conference included a keynote presentation, delivered in conjunction with the annual Clive Schmitthoff Memorial Lecture, by Professor Kerry Rittich, from the University of Toronto and was rounded off with an exhibition of photography on the theme of ‘Law and Society’.

The Kent LLM, a flexible Masters in Law programme, attracts excellent law graduates from around the world and is also open to non-law graduates with an appropriate academic or professional background who wish to develop an advanced understanding of law in their field.
