Eric Loefflad (Lecturer in Law at Kent Law School) and Vicky Kapogianni (Lecturer in EU and International Law at University of Reading), co-authors of ‘China’s Maritime Militias, Human Rights, and the Law of the Sea: Contested Norms in a Shifting International Legal Order’, have won the Aldo Leucci and Ortensio Degli Atti Award for best article in the Yearbook on the Law of the Sea (the peer reviewed publication of the Associazione di Consulenza in Diritto del Mare (ASCOMARE), which is the International Association of the Law of the Sea.
This article is part of a larger collaborative effort between Dr Loefflad and Dr Kapogianni on the critical re-imagination of international law and the world’s oceans and islands. In addition to this work on the South China Sea, the two have also collaborated on projects concerning the Falklands/Malvinas dispute, the resettlement of the Chagos Islands, the question of Caribbean climate reparations, and the relationship between oceanic space and the crime of genocide.
In communicating news of the award to Eric and Vicky, Editor-in-Chief Pierandrea Leucci added:
‘The Board was particularly impressed by the depth of your legal analysis, the rigor of your methodology, and the timeliness of your insights. Your article distinguished itself as a remarkable and original contribution to the evolving discourse on the law of the sea, earning unanimous recognition as this year’s award winner.’
Eric teaches on a variety of modules at Kent Law School and is the LLM Pathway Director for Human Rights Law.
