This week’s Tuesday meeting at Kent Law Clinic was led by the Student Committee vice-chair Terrie Boinnet.
Student Committee updates:
- LawWorks 2018 Pro Bono Awards: Kent Law Clinic has been shortlisted in the LawWorks 2018 Annual Pro Bono Awards for its ‘Outstanding Contribution to Access to Justice’ over the last ten years
- Kent Makeni Project: students were invited to add their name to the sign-up sheet on the noticeboard in Kent Law Clinic if they’d like to get involved
- Student Committee social event: a fun social, on-campus event is planned to enable everyone attending the weekly meetings to get to know each other better – details tbc
Law Clinic case updates:
- Enquiries this week: 64 enquiries have come into the Clinic this week, one of the highest number of enquiries in any one week the Clinic has taken, many of which involve family law
- Mobile home case: Solicitor Vivien Gambling invited student assistance with a case involving a client who is owed money for a mobile home that he bought (but never took possession of) and which the mobile home park owners (who initially sold it to him) had agree to sell on for him. The case is now going to court. Students interested in assisting Vivien can contact her in the Clinic or via email
- Criminal Justice Project: Law student Erin reported on a recent visit to the Crown Court during which she accompanied Criminal Justice Project Supervising Solicitor Hannah Uglow for the sentencing of a client. Hannah led a discussion about the sentencing which was unusual in that the charge was lowered (twice) from attempted Grievous Bodily Harm to affray. The discussion included reference to issues of causation (the but-for test) and Joint Enterprise (R v Jogee)
- Action against the police: One of the new enquiries taken this week (by a law student volunteer on reception duty) involves a possible action against the police under the Police and Criminal Evidence (PACE) Act 1984. Students heard an explanation of the details of the case which included a discussion about police powers to use reasonable force.
- Family law case: Solicitor Philippa Bruce discussed one of the new family law enquiries that came into the Clinic this week which centres on a birth certificate and the issue of ‘parental responsibility’. Students were invited to sign up on the noticeboard if they were interested in working with Philippa on this case.
