Kent drone research quoted in House of Lords debate

Drone research undertaken by Kent academic Dr Alan McKenna was referenced at the launch of a debate on the civilian use of drones by Baroness O’Cathain in the House of Lords last night.

Whilst launching the debate, Baroness O’Cathain quoted research by Dr McKenna that found ‘there had been more than 400 calls made to the police regarding incidents involving drones over the last two years.’

A full account of the ensuing discussions is available to read in the Hansard Report (from page 1356).

The report on which the debate was based, ‘Civilian Use of Drones in the EU’, was prepared by the European Union Committee and published on 5 March. It included written evidence submitted by Dr McKenna, an Associate Lecturer at Kent Law School. Dr McKenna subsequently attended the House of Lords to discuss the report in more detail in a seminar with fellow evidence contributors.

Dr McKenna’s research interests include the information society, communication law, information law, media, human rights, information technology law, international commercial law, data protection, privacy and asbestos-related issues.
