Careers workshop for students interested in international law

A careers workshop for students interested in pursuing a career in international law has been organised by the Centre for Critical International Law (CeCIL) at Kent Law School.

The workshop, taking place on Tuesday 19 May in Rutherford Lecture Theatre 2, will feature presentations by University of Kent careers adviser Jenny Keaveney and a panel of practising international lawyers including Iain Byrne (Amnesty International), Alan Deve (UN High Commission for Refugees), and Professor Nick Grief (practising barrister and Kent Law School academic).

In the opening session at 3pm, Jenny Keaveney will be giving expert advice about CVs and covering letters as well as outlining the types of employment opportunities open to Kent graduates in the sphere of international law. Kent Law School’s Employability and Career Development Officer Jayne Instone will also be in attendance.

Shortly after 5pm, members of the expert panel will talk informally about their careers in international law before opening up the floor to questions.

Iain Byrne is Head of the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights team within the Global Thematics Programme at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International. Previously he held various positions at INTERIGHTS, the international centre for the legal protection of human rights, including acting Legal Practice Director and Senior Lawyer with lead responsibility for litigation work on economic and social rights. Since 2000 he has been a Fellow of the Human Rights Centre, University of Essex. He has been involved in litigation in domestic fora across the Commonwealth and beyond and before the European Committee of Social Rights, the European Court of Human Rights and the UN Human Rights Committee. He has taught for many years on both the LLM and MA Human Rights courses at the University of Essex focusing on economic, social and cultural rights. He has lectured widely in many countries and conducted training courses for amongst others the United Nations, European Union, Council of Europe and the British Council.

Alan Deve is a Protection Associate with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The agency is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees

Professor Nick Grief is a practising barrister and academic at Kent Law School. As an associate tenant at Doughty Street Chambers in London, he specialises in public international law, human rights and EU law and has often been instructed as an expert witness on matters of international law, especially the legal status of nuclear weapons.

The workshop is open to all students interested in a career in international law but is likely to be of particular interest to undergraduate students studying the International Law Module (LW506) and to postgraduate LLM and PGR students.
