Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales Baroness Shami Chakrabarti CBE will give the annual Keith Tucker Memorial Lecture at Kent on Thursday 19 October.
The lecture ‘Women and the Law; institutional inequality and the case for radical change’ will address judicial diversity and legal protection for women.
Hosted jointly by the University of Kent and Kent Law Society, the lecture is open to all but attendees are asked to register online and secure a ticket in advance (no payment is required).
Baroness Chakrabarti CBE is the Shadow Attorney General and a member of the House of Lords. First called to the Bar in 1994 she worked in the Home Office from 1996 to 2001 for Governments of both persuasions. During her time as Director of Liberty, Baroness Chakrabarti CBE was a panel member of the Leveson Inquiry, the judicial inquiry into UK phone hacking in 2011.
Starting with tea and coffee at 6pm the lecture (in Woolf Lecture Theatre) will be followed by a drinks reception and buffet at 7.30pm in Darwin Conference Suite.
The annual memorial lecture was first established in 1983 to honour the memory of Keith Tucker, a former Honorary Secretary of Kent Law Society. This year’s lecture not only honours Keith and Marga Tucker, but also District Judge Edwina Miller, former President of the Kent Law Society and the first ever female national President of the Association of District Judges, who sadly passed away this summer.
