Student perspective: Studying abroad for a year in Hong Kong

Read about undergraduate law student Angelica's experiences studying abroad for a year at The University of Hong Kong

Angelica Ascolese is about to embark on the fourth year of her International Legal Studies with a Year Abroad LLB at Kent Law School. She has just spent a year studying law abroad in Hong Kong, at The University of Hong Kong.

Here are Angelica’s reflections …

‘🇮🇹 I grew up in the Italian educational system. I did not take any A levels, as I obtained the Italian Diploma instead, which sometimes makes it hard to showcase my academic abilities. Nevertheless, Kent did not give me a hard time because of it and I could enrol in my dream course (International Legal Studies with a year abroad).

🦶 “These feet will make big steps” is what my mom told me when I was born and, ever since, I have indeed fulfilled that thought. Going abroad can be scary, it may make you feel lost and alone at times but, during the journey, you create so many good memories that braveness finds you and you recognize a familiar face in each soul you meet.

🇭🇰 I started my journey at Kent Law School aware and faithful that it could lead me to study in Hong Kong. During this adventure, I have found my true self and never felt better. Have I had bad days? Of course! But even those were so insignificant, compared to the good ones, that I have forgotten them already, replacing them with the love received from the friends and mentors I have met.

🤩 Along the way, I have also grown my curiosity about legal studies, having the chance to explore my passions. For instance, I have taken postgraduate courses, language courses, and even attended a Philosophy class! It is beyond me that I could achieve all this at the age of 20. My advice to all the students who are afraid to make that step is to not let fear decide your future because regret is a deadly poison to the soul. There is no better time than TODAY to write your future!’

Laura Charleton, Director of the International Legal Studies LLB at Kent Law School, adds her thanks to Angelica for her fantastic photos and inspiring words for anyone considering study abroad during their undergraduate degree.
