Rosemary Hunter, Head of Kent Law School and Professor of Law and Socio-Legal Studies, has been appointed honorary King’s Counsel (KC Hon.). His Majesty The King bestowed this prestigious award upon only nine legal figures in the country in 2022.
KC Honoris Causa or Honorary KC is an honorary award unique to the legal profession. It recognises those in the profession who have made a major contribution to, and impact on, the law of England and Wales outside the courtroom.
Alongside the honorary awards, HM The King approved the appointment of 95 barristers and solicitors as new King’s Counsel on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, following consideration by the independent King’s Counsel Selection Panel. This is the first group of King’s Counsel to be appointed for more than 70 years.
The announcement, on 23 December, indicated that this award was as a result of Professor Hunter’s scholarly achievements in the study of the Family Justice System, together with her work in the important field of domestic abuse which has directly affected legislative developments.
Upon hearing the announcement, Professor Hunter said “I am thrilled to receive this award. I owe sincere thanks to those who made and supported my nomination, and all those who have collaborated in, supported and encouraged my work on family justice and domestic abuse over the years.”
The Lord Chancellor will preside over the appointment ceremony at Westminster Hall on 27 March 2023, where he will formally bestow the titles.
KLS and the LSSJ division congratulate Professor Rosemary Hunter KC (Hon.) FAcSS on this fantastic recognition.
