The future of the UK’s relationship with the EU will be the topic of discussion at a colloquium to be held on Friday 17 March at Kent’s centre in Brussels.
The colloquium, entitled ‘New bi-lateralism? ‘Prospectives’ for future UK-EU relations’, will be chaired by Dean for Medway (and Kent Law School Professor) Nick Grief at the Brussels School of International Studies and will take place from 09.00 to 13.00 (CET) with registration beginning at 08.30 (CET).
The keynote presentation on ‘Brexit – the state of play: what do we know and where might we go?’ will be delivered by Professor Richard Whitman, Head of Kent’s School of Politics and International Relations (and Director of the Global Europe Centre) at 09.10 (CET).
Other distinguished guest speakers will focus on three sectors of crucial importance for 21st century economies:
- 09.50 – 10.30 (CET) Sector 1: Energy: oil and gas markets David Powell, Head of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor at Kent and former British ambassador to Norway; and Leonard Hawkes, Solicitor (Juriste Conseil) at DBB Law in Brussels (and Kent Law School alumnus)
- 10.50 – 11.30 (CET) Sector 2: Energy: power markets and renewables Leonard Hawkes, Solicitor (Juriste Conseil) DBB Law
- 11.30 – 12.10 (CET) Digital markets John Higgins CBE, Director General of DIGITALEUROPE, which represents the digital technology industry in Europe
- 12.10 – 12.50 (CET) How competition regulation may work Joanna Goyder, Senior Knowledge Lawyer at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Brussels.
