Kent Law School’s Centre for Critical International Law (CeCIL) will showcase the groundbreaking work of the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) for this year’s Annual Lecture.

The Lecture will be delivered online from 19.00 – 20.00 BST on Wednesday 23 June by GLAN co-founders Dr Gearóid Ó Cuinn and Dr Ioannis Kalpouzos. It will be hosted in partnership with KMTV, the county’s dedicated television channel.

GLAN is a non-profit organisation comprising a unique collaboration of academics, practitioners and investigative journalists. It is dedicated to fighting structural global inequality and injustice in the areas of climate change, migration and supply chains, amongst others, through international human rights legal actions. GLAN pursues innovative legal actions across borders, challenging states and other powerful actors involved with human rights violations.

Dr Ó Cuinn currently serves as Director of GLAN and is responsible for GLAN’s legal actions and strategic growth. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the Transnational Law Institute at Kings College London and an adjunct lecturer at the Irish Centre for Human Rights. His academic research focuses on public international law, human rights and public health governance.

Dr Kalpouzos is a Member of the Legal Action Committee at GLAN which is responsible for advising and providing technical expertise on GLAN’s legal actions. He is a scholar and practitioner in public international law, international criminal law, the law of war and human rights law. He is also a faculty member at City Law School, University of London, and a professor at Boston University School of Law, and Harvard Law School.

In their talk for CeCiL, Dr Gearóid and Dr Ioannis will cover:

  • GLAN’s work on global climate justice
  • open-source intelligence and aerial bombardment
  • the exploitation of conflict affected territories by corporations
  • the violence against migrants in Europe and Australia
  • and accountability and supply chains, including China’s treatment of its Uyghur population.

CeCIL’s Annual Lecture is free and open to all: Register on Eventbrite.

CeCIL is an innovative research centre which aims to foster critical approaches to the field of international law, and other areas of law that touch upon global legal problems. In addition to an annual lecture, CeCIL offers a busy programme of activities for Kent Law School students, including a speaker and films series and workshops for students keen to develop their employability and international law skills. CeCIL also strives to engage students, scholars and practitioners interested in the critical study of international law around the world through developing collaborations and joint research efforts.
