Volunteering at the Olympics

Felicia Hull studied Digital Arts at the University of Kent. She has been working at Kent Sport for over two and half years as a receptionist, and also with the sports development and duty teams. Here she shares her interest in sport and her plans to volunteer at the Olympics this summer.

My favourite sport is swimming and I have been a member of Team Kent Women’s A swimming team since my first year of University. I’ve been competitively swimming since an early age at national standard.

The main thing that inspired me to volunteer in the Olympics is the fact that I am really passionate about sport as its the highest level that an athlete can compete at. For that reason alone I am eager to get involved.

The volunteer interviews were quite straight forward. Firstly, I had to apply by writing why I wanted to volunteer, what skills and qualifications I can contribute and what work I would like to do within the Games. Next I got chosen for a group interview on skype with an employee from Rio. We were given tasks to work within teams and assessed accordingly. This was followed by a one on one skype interview to question more on what role I was looking for and if I would be available to do both the Olympics and the Paralympics.

I didn’t actually find out about being selected until late January and was over the moon that it was confirmed! Mainly because I thought this is such a unique opportunity.

Swimming has been a major part of my life whether training, competing or working as a part time lifeguard or a level three swimming teacher. It has been confirmed that my role at the Olympics will include working alongside the GB team and helping out with the athletes on and off poolside with activities such as lifeguarding as well as general organising within the team. My role at the Paralympics will be working in the Velodrome in the scoring/technology department.

The main aspect of the trip I’m looking forward to is the atmosphere of the Olympic legacy. I’m really excited to be part of this experience and can’t wait to meet new people as well as gaining new skills!  This will be my first time in South America so I’m a bit apprehensive as to what to expect, however I will not be going alone. I have two older brothers that have also been chosen to work alongside of me so I feel I can tackle anything! I will hopefully watch as many other sports as I can while I’m there.

Kent Sport wishes Felicia the best of luck for her volunteer experience in Rio and we look forward to hearing about it later in the year.
