Nerf returned for another year to the VC Cup with 14 teams chaotically battled it out for the top spot on the table. Teams had to pair up with another team (there’s strength in numbers) and each player had 2 lives indicated by wearing 2 bibs. The Main Hall was adorned with bunkers to use as shields from the flying bullets and players had to duck and dodge any flying fire to get to the ammo and guns. Whenever a player was hit they had to retreat to their back line and return a bib, signalling they only had one life left. Once hit again, they had to retreat to home base for good and watch their teammates they left behind. Games last 5 minutes and scoring worked as follows:
- If every team member lost both their lives then the opposing team won and their remaining lives were tallied
- If both teams had surviving players left, the team with the most amount of lives left won the game
There were 2 versions of Nerf played, first was Seeker in which each team had to nominate a “seeker” who’s aim was to get as many balls from their safe area on their side to a bucket in the middle without being shot. The seeker wasn’t allowed a Nerf gun so teams had to work to protect this player, if hit, the seeker had to retreat back to home base before trying again. The next game was Medic where teams could invade their enemies territory to eliminate them. Each team had a nominated “medic” who had the ability to bring any of their players back to life with a simple tap on the shoulder. BUT, if the medic was shot, then hopes of winning diminished with teams no longer having their reviving capabilities.
Day 1 saw seven teams: U Bunch O’Kents, Sofa Sitters, Marlowe’s Marauders, Campus Sporting Exploits, Flu Fighters, RISistence is Futile and DoNATS in the first hour. The second hour also consisted of seven teams: Liquorice All Sports, Living La Vida Mocha, Chipperfield Circus, Regulatory Rebels, Infomaniacs, Return of the MAC and SPPecials . U Bunch O’ Kents showed off their sharp shooting skills by winning all four of their games and gaining twelve points for their team and putting a large gap between them and the Marlowe’s Marauders, Flu Fighters, and DoNATS who all tied for second place on the first day with 6 points each. Campus Sporting Exploits, and Sofa Sitters tied near the bottom of the table with 1 win each, earning 3 points and at the bottom were RISistence is Futle with no wins but looking to improve their points total on day two.
In the second hour slot, the top team was Liquorice All Sports with 3 wins and a draw, earning 10 points for the Kent Sport team. Infomaniacs and SPPecials found themselves in the middle of the table with 2 wins each and and Regulatory Rebels, Living La Vida Mocha, and Return of the MAC closely trailed behind with 1 win each. Chipperfield Circus sat at the bottom of the table with 4 losses but great team spirit.
The second day grouped teams based on their ranking from day 1, for another day of excitement. The first hour engaged the bottom five teams (due to some dropouts) in another hour of fun (Campus Sporting Exploits, RISistence, Living La Vida Mocha, Chipperfield Circus & Sofa Sitters). Campus Sporting Exploits, RISistence and Living La Vida Mocha tied with 9 points each winning 3 games and losing one each. Just behind was Chipperfield Circus with 2 wins and 2 losses followed by Sofa Sitters at the bottom of the table with 1 win. Regulatory Rebels gained 0 points for the second day due to a no show.
The second hour was action-packed as the top seven teams enthusiastically competed for the top spot. These games were close but Infomaniacs narrowly topped the table with 2 wins a draw and a loss, earning 7 points. Just behind was U Bunch O’ Kents with 6 points having a strong performance, also winning 2 games. DoNats and Marlowe’s Marauders secured spots in the middle of the table winning one game each. The bottom teams for the second hour were all neck and neck for points, but in the end, in order were SPPecials, Liquorice All Sports and then Flu Fighters.
After 2 eventful days of running, ducking and firing the overall winner of Nerf was Infomaniacs! Event points plus a bonus point for having a full team for both days gave them a whopping 21 points for Nerf. In second were U Bunch O’ Kents with their accuracy and speed earning them 20 points followed by DoNATS placing third on the podium, managing to gain 18 points. Marlowe’s Marauders and SPPecials came 4th and 5th respectively, followed by Return of the MAC who used their free hit chip to secure them a middle spot in the competing teams. Liquorice All Sports, Flu Fighters, Campus Sporting Exploits and RISistence is Futile also sat in the middle of the table with Living La Vida Mocha, Chipperfield Circus, Sofa Sitters and then Regulatory Rebels below them. Comms not Bombs, Ins and Outs and Keepers of the Keys tied at the bottom with 0 points due to no shows so they will be looking to redeem themselves for the next event. Thank you to everyone who participated and made the event enjoyable and so entertaining. The next event is VC Cup Goalball!
