On Friday the 14th March 2014 Peter Johnson was presented with the Kent Sport Shaw Award in recognition of his Commitment through Adversity demonstrated weekly at the University of Kent Sports Centre. Peter is spouse to University Masters Assistant Meredith Johnson and has been using the Sports Centre since his referral in October last year.
The Shaw Award was launched in 2011 in partnership with former University Staff member Howard Shaw who worked together with Kent Sport to create the award in memory of his late wife Maria. The Award was set up to honour members who through the exercise referral scheme demonstrated commitment through adversity in striving to achieve their health and fitness goals. Since its launch there have only been two other recipients prior to Peter’s nomination.
Peter was nominated for his persistence and positive attitude to his rehabilitation following a serious accident sustained whilst travelling in 2013. Having been referred, Peter has worked closely with several Kent Sport Health and Fitness Instructors as well as the new on site Physiotherapy to devise a programme to help him manage the consequences of his accident.
Liz Coult (Health & Fitness Instructor) said “Peter’s attitude and determination is an example to all and his self-motivation is an inspiration to others”. In accepting his Award, Peter acknowledged the work of the Fitness Team “I would like to say a huge thank you for all the help, understanding & encouragement. Liz and the team have been incredibly supportive and understanding throughout and I feel they are the ones who deserve some kind of accolade for their hard work”.
