Health & Wellbeing Flavour of the Month: June

  Glen Carrie:

Below is your heads-up calendar for the health and wellbeing initiatives for the month ahead. There are a number of initiatives related to community activities which can be an excellent activity to get involved in to boost wellbeing and mental health.

  • Bike Week, 30 May – 05 June: organised by Cycling UK, the week is an annual celebration to showcase cycling and how brilliant it is. Their information emphasises that ‘Cycling remains a great way to keep fit and active and is a good way to boost immunity, it’s also fantastic for your well-being.’
  • Sands | Stillbirth and neonatal death charity Awareness Month: Sands is a charity that supports those affected by stillbirth and neonatal death. It’s theme for this year is ‘Always There’ which has a double emphasis that the life of the baby who has died remains real and always there in the memories of relatives and that SANDS is always there for those affected by stillbirths and neonatal deaths.
  • Volunteers’ Week, 01-07 June: Volunteers’ Week is a chance to say thank you for the fantastic contribution volunteers make and to find out what you could volunteer to do which could help others. Wellbeing research shows that doing something for others is a great way to boost your mental health and helps you feel good about yourself. And all this while doing something for others at the same time!
  • The Big Lunch, 07 June and for the next month: this initiative is linked to the previous one. The Big Lunch is promoted by the Eden Project Communities and is all about the importance of community. • National Growing for Wellbeing Week, 07-13 June: this initiative is promoted by an organisation called Life at No. 27. The focus of the week is how beneficial gardening is as a wellbeing activity: ‘Gardening improves mental health, enables better physical health, provides an opportunity to connect with others, acquire new skills and enjoy the great outdoors.’
