At the beginning of Feburary, our VC Cup staff members took on the new and exciting challenge of trying out a new sport, Korfball!
Korfball is a fast-paced team sport that uniquely promotes gender equality, with men and women playing together on the same team. Originating in the Netherlands, it combines elements of basketball and netball, focusing on teamwork, movement, and fair play.
Over 2 sessions, the players got to grips with the rules and gameplay of this sport, concluding with exciting results. We were very fortunate to have the assistance of the University of Kent Korfball society, who demonstrated the rules and acted as referees on each court.
Teams alternated playing with and against other teams, keeping the matches fresh and exciting. Last One’s Standing teamed up with Ctrl+Alt+Win and played against BDRI Bunch and Liquorice all Sports, a high energy game with close shots and fast paced game play. Both teams scoring 2 points, resulting in a draw.
On the adjacent court, we were anticipating the match between Winter Soldiers x PIINATS and Marlowe’s Marauders x U Bunch o’Kents. Seeing these four teams playing a match was exhilarating, with supporters on the sidelines cheering on their respective teams. After some tantalising scores, Marlowe’s Marauders x U Bunch o’Kents took the lead with 4 goals scored across the 10 minute match.
Day two rolled around, and our players were ready for more. Our teams went head to head in the final round of matches. On one court, a highly intense game of korfball was played between Last Ones Standing, BDRI Bunch and Ctrl +Alt + Win, with both sides earing a point, resulting in a draw.
And on the other, Liquorice All Sports, U Bunch o’Kents and Marlowe’s Marauders played their final match that had spectators at the edge of their seats, ending the match in a respectable draw.
All teams played valiantly against their opponents, but in the end there can only be one winner. Congratulations to Liquorice All Sports for winning VC Cup Korfball!
