Sports Scholarship Tier Framework 2020/21

The Sports Scholarship Scheme offers University of Kent Students’ financial and physical support to participate and perform in Sports whilst studying for their degree. The scheme runs annually from September until June each Academic Year and is centrally funded.

Kent Sport is responsible for the administration of the Scheme with a Scholarship Committee in place to oversee recruitment and selection.

The Scheme operates across five Tiers of financial support. The following guide can be used to determine the appropriate Tier for successful applicants.

All Scholarships are centrally funded and subject to the detailed terms and conditions.

Elite Scholarship

  • Scholarships between £2000-£5000
  • Reserved for the highest performing athletes competing at the top of their sporting pyramid
  • Athletes will usually be competing Internationally (often above their age group) and may have Olympic ambitions depending on their Sport
  • Athletes may represent their country in their sport
  • Athletes may have a professional club contract or sponsor

Tier 1 with Expenses

  • Scholarships of £1000 plus up to £500 expenses
  • Athletes will be performing to a high level outside of University Sport
  • Athletes will be competing in National level competitions and events
  • Expenses can be used to supplement costs but receipts must be provided
  • Athletes may have links to professional clubs or sponsors

Tier 1R without Expenses

  • Scholarships of £1000 with no additional expense budget
  • Athletes will be performing to a high level outside of University Sport
  • Athletes will usually be competing in National events and competitions
  • Athletes may have links to professional clubs or sponsors

Tier 2

  • Scholarships of £750
  • Athletes will be performing to a high level within University Sport
  • Athletes should be competing for University honours with individual sports
  • Athletes will be competing in regional up to national competitions
  • Team Sport Scholars will usually represent amateur clubs locally or at home

Tier 3

  • Scholarships of £300
  • Successful Michaelmas Trial Scholars will graduate to Tier 3 for Year 1
  • Athletes will be performing at a high level within University Sport
  • External representation limited to regional competitions
  • Athletes may have limited access to University competition due to sport

KMMS Scholarships

  • Scholarships of £1000 exclusively for KMMS Students
  • Will meet the performance requirements of Tier 2 or above
  • May receive special dispensation due to degree requirements
  • Will otherwise have the same expectations as regular Sports Scholars

The Scholarship Committee makes the final decision regarding allocated Tier and Funding Level and reserves the right to move Scholars between Tiers or remove them from the Scheme accordingly.
