Professor Warwick Funnell, Professor of Accounting and Public Sector Accountability and Head of Accounting at Kent Business School recently published a new book, “Accounting at War: The Politics of Military Finance.”
Published in April 2015 by Routledge (Taylor/Francis), Accounting at War emphasises the significant power that financial and accounting controls have given to political elites and the impact of these controls on military performance.
From the Crimean War to the War on Terror, the book emphasises how accounting has been used to assert civilian control over the military, instil rational business practices on war, and create the visibilities and invisibilities necessary to legitimize the use of force.
Co-authored with Michele Chwastiak, Associate Professor of Accounting at the Anderson School of Management, University of New Mexico, USA, Accounting at War represents a unique and critical perspective to the fields of accounting, accounting history, political management and sociology.
Professor Funnell is nationally and internationally recognised for his public sector research, in particular the impact of the new public management reforms on public sector audit and accountability. He has published five books. His most recent book, Accounting at War is available online at Taylor & Francis.
From 6pm on 27 May, 2015 there will be a book launch event with a talk by Professor Funnell about the themes from Accountancy at War. The event will be held at Lecture Theatre 1, Grimond Building, University of Kent, Canterbury.
