Yemurai Machacha studied BSc Finance and Investment and works as an Investment Risk Assistant.
What attracted you to your programme of study and why?
The School is affiliated with the CFA Institute and was linked to the CFA syllabus. I started the CFA [Chartered Financial Analyst] journey after I graduated, and I am looking to completing all three papers.
Which modules did you enjoy the most and why?
I took an introductory module on data analytics and statistics for business and enjoyed the way the module was taught. Lectures were very engaging, and the foreign concepts were explained particularly well.
Tell us about the business you work for
Columbia Threadneedle Investments is an international investment company. We offer a broad range of investment strategies and solutions in investment.
What does your job role entail?
I make sure that when people are investing money for you, they’re taking the appropriate risks. So they’re not over or under investing. As the assistant, I spend a lot of time listening in on investment deals and learning strategy. For now, I work primarily with Fixed Income, but when I first started it was equity. I’m working more towards ESG, as that’s what I have a big interest in.
How do you use your studies in your job role?
Based on what I studied under the fixed income and equity modules, I noticed that a lot of the jargon used is the same modules. Other things that I use are things like standard deviation or swing prices. I wouldn’t have known about them without my degree.
Also, just being prepared and organised for meetings and understanding the professional environment was something I built at university. Working as a student ambassador also prepared me with good communication and engagement skills.
