PhD Student Cuts the Mustard

Kent Business School PhD student, Tom Hollands, won the Technical Excellence Award at the ‘Sammies’, the Oscars of the UK sandwich industry, on Thursday 17 May 2012.

Tom combines his postgraduate studies with a demanding role as Technical Manager for Raynor Foods.  The innovations that earned him this high profile award included: working with suppliers on a new type of tomato for sandwich making which tastes really intense and doesn’t make the bread go soggy; creating an exclusive variety of high-yield/low waste hybrid lettuce which doesn’t go brown and stays crispy and tasty for extended periods, and a butter sprayer that improves buttering accuracy whilst reducing waste.
