Professor Jim Mansell

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Professor Jim Mansell on 13 March following a long illness.

Professor Mansell founded the University’s Tizard Centre in 1983. A respected and influential figure in the field of learning disabilities and care environments, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to people with intellectual disabilities in January 2012. He retired from the University in December 2010.

Among those to pay tribute to Professor Mansell were colleagues from the Tizard Centre. Peter McGill, Co-director of the Centre, said: ‘We have been overwhelmed with the volume and strength of feeling of those who have contacted us to express their condolences since Jim’s death. Over the past 40 years Jim not only established and developed university teaching and research in learning disability, he also made a great difference to the lives of disabled people and their families through his personal contact with them and his impact on policy and service change. We will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with all his family, friends and colleagues at this time.’

University announces 100 doctoral scholarships

The University of Kent, in preparation for its 50th anniversary in 2015, has established 100 doctoral scholarships for UK, EU and international students. This presents an excellent opportunity for collaborative research to be initiated between Kent academics and health professionals within the region.

The scholarships, which will be awarded annually from 2012, will complement the already significant investment the University makes in its postgraduate community.

The University of Kent has an excellent reputation for its dynamic and challenging academic environment, as well as its collaborative research with universities around the world.

Its specialist Graduate School works to enhance the quality of the postgraduate student experience and ensures a supportive and vibrant postgraduate community across all its campuses.

Professor Diane Houston, Dean of the Graduate School, said: ‘The Graduate School is leading the growth of doctoral training and research at the University of Kent. In the last five years the number of doctorates awarded has increased by 25 percent. These new fully funded scholarships are a key investment that Kent is making in its own future and that of research in the UK.’

Further information for potential students on the 50th Anniversary Research Scholarships, including details of how to apply, is available at: www.kent.ac.uk/

Fd Sci Applied Bioscience Technology screenshot of PDF documentMedway School of Pharmacy is proud to announce the launch of a new Foundation Degree (Fd Sci) in Applied Bioscience Technology.

This 3-year, work-based e-learning programme, developed with employers, is designed to support people wanting to progress their career within small and medium enterprises (SME) and global organisations allied to the life-sciences. It incorporates interactive e-learning on topics such as Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Human Physiology and Disease, Pharmacology, and Technology Transfer.  The school also offers on- and off-site academic support, short residential blocks to address technical skills, and accredits in-house training.

The course is suitable for those with roles in the life-science industry from research throughdevelopment and into manufacturing and is ideally suited to those that have little or no formal qualifications post GCSE/A Level/HNC and who would benefit from additional knowledge and skills that can be directly applied in their work environment.  Currently we have learners from GlaxoSmithKline, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Catalent Pharma Solutions, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals.

To discuss any aspects of the Applied Bioscience Technology degree programme, including possible start-dates and fees, please contact Dr Scott Wildman.
