These last two months have seen us head back into a national lockdown, but it hasn’t stopped our staff and students! Here is a summary of what has been going on here in the School of Economics.

We launched into 2021…

  • The first of its kind in the UK, we have developed an exciting new undergraduate programme in Economics with Data Science. Students will study programming, artificial intelligence and machine learning plus learn how to tackle some of today’s economic problems. Learn more.
  • Inspired by the extraordinary circumstances we have organised an 8-week Mindfulness course for our students. Get involved.

We considered the future…

  • Stage three student and President of the Economics Society, Joel Pointon said as economics students “we are statistically less likely to be unemployed – clearly, the skills you gain through studying for an Economics degree are valued in the marketplace”. Read more.

  • Stage 3 students Oliver Turner from Economics and Harvey Dorset from History were interviewed after raising over £200. “Men’s mental health affects everyone and is something that, until recently, has been massively overlooked”. Read the full story.

The Brexit Transition Period drew to a close…

  • The Centre for European Agri-Environmental Studies gained more Horizon 2020 research funding – Professors Sophia Davidovaand Alastair Bailey, both played an instrumental part in drawing together the project consortium and designing the research project itself. Read more.

Our economists have had an ‘unprecedented’ period of research…

  • Dr Zaki Wahhaj’s research demonstrated a decline in ‘son preference’ by women of childbearing age in Bangladesh. Learn more.
  • Should older workers pay higher taxes than younger ones?  Professors Miltos Makris and Alessandro Pavan’s taxation paper was accepted in the Journal of Political Economy. Learn more.

History was made…

  • On 14th December 2020, Kent signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding with North South University in Bangladesh in an online ceremony to develop collaboration in student mobility, staff exchange, joint research supervision, and research projects. Read more.
