New food and drink policy

In response to your feedback, we rolled out our new food and drink policy on Monday 7 December. It gives you a bit more flexibility as to where and what you can eat and drink in the library.

  • Cold food and snacks can now be eaten in the Group Zone, but not in any of the other Zones.
  • Hot and cold drinks in a container with a secure lid are allowed anywhere – cans are still not allowed.
  • Any hot or greasy food must still be consumed in the café.

We have installed new liquid disposal bins, which are standing beside the normal bins. These are for liquid disposal only – please tip any leftover liquid into these bins and then put the empty cup in the recycling or rubbish bins.

What’s new in your library?

We have been busy during the summer adding some exciting new improvements to the library to further enhance the study environment and make your experience of using the library even more positive! You asked for more Silent Study spaces and Group Study areas so we have added both – and more.

  • We now have 250 Silent Study and 224 Group Study spaces.
  •  Colourful desk dividers in the Quiet and Silent Study Zones, increasing comfort and creating a better study environment.
  • Newly fitted Group Study Rooms with modern vibrant booth-style furniture and plasma screens to allow you to work with your friends. We have also added new furniture in the three bookable Group Study Rooms adjacent to the Group Study Zone, which are all equipped with wireless presentation facilities. These rooms can be booked at the Reception on 01634 883878 and are available for group practice between 9am and 5pm Mon-Fri for two-hour slots.
  • We have revamped our library foyer by relocating the Welcome Desk to a more prominent position and moving the self-service machines.
  •  The former Student Support Zone was renamed at Student Referral Zone, and is now located next to the Welcome Desk so it can provide on-demand IT and Library support in a friendly and comfortable setting.
  • Law Books were relocated amongst the rest of the collection.

  • User-friendly iPad catalogue points;
  • new super-sharp projectors in the Pilkington lecture theatres;

Library improvements coming up!

We have some exciting plans coming up during this summer to further enhance the study environment and the look of the Drill Hall Library!

After the exams we will begin adding more Silent Study spaces with new look desk partition screens and table layout. We will also be creating more Group Study rooms with flexible furniture and technologies that will be ideal for working together in small groups.

More power sockets on desks to help you charge your mobile phone or laptop.

We will also carry out some essential maintenance from end of June to freshen up the look of the library by laying down a brand new carpet starting from the Group Study Zone, and moving some shelving by integrating the Law Books (Dewey shelf marks 340-349) amongst the rest of the main collection, which will create more space in the Group end and freshen up the look of the zone.

We will try and keep interruptions to a minimum and while works are going on extra staff will be around to help.

To keep up to date with what’s happening in the library follow us on Twitter (@drillhalllib) or Facebook (Drill Hall Library). You can now also find us on Instagram (@drillhalllibrary)!

24/7 is here!

Following last year’s successful pilot and user feedback, the 24/7 exam opening will now be here as a permanent fixture each year! The Library will be open 24/7 from 23rd March until Friday 5th June. This will now also include Bank Holidays! See detailed service hours here.

We are here to help and wish you good luck with your exam revision!

Please read our 24/7 Facts & Reminders and FAQs which will give you useful information of services available in the library and on campus during the 24/7 opening.

Students are kindly reminded to note our “No ID, No Entry” policy. Day Passes are not issued after midnight.

Also please note that we are operating the Unattended Belongings & PCs policy, which means that any items left in the library for a long time will be removed by staff and PCs restarted for another user. Any unsaved documents and files may be lost in the process.

Unattended belongings & PCs

The library is introducing a new policy on unattended belongings and PCs that are left idle by users for a long time. This will mean that any belongings left in the library for such period will be removed by staff and PCs restarted to be available for other users. Any unsaved data or temporary files may be lost in this process.

The new policy was introduced as a response to user feedback and has been endorsed by the Library User Group in October 2014.

All the removed items are kept for a fortnight after which they will be disposed of. The owners of the unattended belongings can claim their property back from Reception by presenting a valid ID and providing an appropriate description of the items.

We advise all our users not to leave your belongings in the library and to save your work regularly on the network drive or memory stick to avoid losing any important files and documents.
