St Patrick’s Day occurs annually on March 17 in observance of the death of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It began as a religious feast day in the 17th century and has evolved into a variety of festivals across the globe celebrating Irish culture with parades, music, dancing, Irish foods and a whole lot of green.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.

There are traditionally 40 days in Lent; in modern times, observers of Lent give up something they enjoy, like chocolate or wine and often invest the time or money saved in charitable purposes or organisations. So what are you giving up?

Shrove Tuesday is the day in February or March immediately preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes.
