Alumni Spotlight: Emma French, MSc Professional Practice

Emma French is Student Operations Manager in the Division of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Kent.

Emma did an Undergraduate degree in Criminology and Sociology, and had been working at the University for seven years before she enrolled on the MSc in Professional Practice.

Emma talked to us about her experience of doing the course and the positive impact it has had on her career:

What inspired you to apply for this programme?

I was looking for personal and professional development.  I had also thought about doing an apprenticeship but once I started finding out more about them I realised it wouldn’t easily fit into my job role so instead I took up this course which I was able to do mostly in my own time.

How did you find the course overall?

I really enjoyed the course, applying theories from taught sessions to my job/tasks made it really interesting and gave me a new perspective on my professional practice

How have you used what you learnt on the course in your job role?

I use reflective practice all the time now; although I did try to do this before, often it was subconsciously and definitely not in the same depth as I do now. The course also helped me to approach my work less reactively and look at the bigger picture. When faced with an issue it helped me discover and investigate influencing factors that would not have occurred to me previously.

Has the course helped you to develop professional relationships?

Definitely! One of the best parts of the teaching sessions were the ability to discuss the subject we were taught, having others’ real life examples made it really interesting. It has helped me establish professional relationships with colleagues who were on the course and worked in my institution that I had never come across before.

What advice do you have for anyone considering undertaking the Professional Practice course?

I would wholeheartedly recommend it. It has helped me further my professional practice which led me to a promotion. It made me far more interested in my role and how it can be improved for all stakeholders. It also had a really positive impact on my personal development, was a challenge that I was able to complete and I am proud that I did.
