TASKS

The ICA is seeking a student placement to support the Associate Curator of Artists’ Film and Moving Image on a voluntary basis. The student will work closely with the curator to plan and deliver an exhibition and events within the ICA’s public programme.

We are a very busy and lively office and we require individuals able to think and react fast, working closely with members of the team on general administrative and office duties whilst gaining an overview of a highly regarded arts organisation. Successful candidates have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of the ICA’s activities and events during their placement.

You will assist on the preparation and research of a Reading Room display that looks back at the history of the ICA Video Library/Videotheque, a pioneering collection of over 1000 Umatic, Digibeta, VHS, and Audio tapes available for onsite viewing between 1981 and 1993. During this time the Video Library occupied the ICA’s Cinema 2, which was then called the Cinematheque. This was a flexible space hosting the Video Library during the day; in evenings the space was used as a screening room for a programme of experimental Super8 and 16mm works.

The Reading Room display will host a collection of printed ephemera from the Video Library, alongside multiple sources of screening material, offering an opportunity to reengage with the collection. Through investigation of the archive, a selection of works and related material will be framed for their relevance to contemporary contexts and discussions.

A series of guest artists/curators will select from the Videotheque catalogue re-presenting recordings from the collection, viewable on monitors in the space.
