New multichannel composition ‘Wetlands’ by Aki Pasoulas receives its World Premiere

Aki's composition was commissioned by the SoundLapse research team in Chile, and is based on field recordings of urban wetlands.

Electroacoustic composer Dr Aki Pasoulas, Senior Lecturer in Music and Audio Technology, saw his new multichannel composition ‘Wetlands’ receive its World Premiere performance in St Petersburg, Russia, at the Epicentroom International Audiovisual Festival on 13 October 2021.

Aki’s composition was commissioned by the SoundLapse research team in Chile, and it is based on field recordings of urban wetlands around the city of Valdivia.

Wetlands are transition zones between dry land and aquatic environments. Urban wetlands add pressure because of the proximity of human activity to the natural ecosystems. This composition explores a dialogue between sounds living, moving and interacting in those spaces, creating tension and release moments when meeting human-made noise and activity.

‘Wetlands’ was realised as a 36-channel ambisonic composition. A binaural version will be published by the German label Gruenrekorder before the end of 2021 and a concert in Chile featuring ‘Wetlands’ will take place in November.
