Alumni celebrate 50 years of the Gulbenkian

The Gulbenkian

To celebrate the end of the 50th anniversary year for the Gulbenkian, our on campus theatre, cinema and café, there will be a specially-curated cabaret event, celebrating the stories and people who have contributed to venue over the last half century. The event will be hosted this Saturday, 7 December 2019, at 7.30pm.

Named after the title of the first ever performance at Gulbenkian ‘Exploding Dream’, the event will bring together alumni turned professional artists across comedy, music and spoken word who have been a part of the Gulbenkian’s history. The event has been curated and will be hosted by Dr Oliver Double, Reader in Drama in the School of Arts.

Among the alumni returning to perform, are several School of Arts’ graduates, including the following:

Comedian Tiernan Douieb, who graduated with a BA (Hons) in Drama and Theatre in 1999, has been doing stand up in the UK and intentionally for over a decade, and is known for using his comedy to sift through political nonsense, opinion and truth in the friendliest and funniest manner possible.

Matthew Crosby, who graduated with a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Film in 1999, is a award winning writer and comedian. A hugely successful writer, Matthew has written on a host of TV and radio comedy shows including The Last Leg, 8/10 Cats, Mock The Week, Harry Hill’s Alien Fun Capsule, Celebrity Juice, Harry Hill’s Tea Time and The Now Show.

Tom Parry, who graduated with a BA (Hons) in Drama and English and American Literature from Kent in 2003, is a comedian, director, writer and actor. His latest stand up hour PARRYOKE! recently completed a critically acclaimed run at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival where it was named one of the best reviewed shows of the Fringe by the British Comedy Guide.

Lauren Carroll graduated with a BA (Hons) in Drama and Theatre earlier this year, and won the Eric Barker Prize for achieving the highest result in work related to comedy.

And finally, avid poet and writer Chad-lee Brown who also graduated with a BA (Hons) in Drama and Theatre earlier this year, and who has begun exploring stand-up comedy.
