The School of Arts is delighted to be able to offer The Vice Chancellor’s Research Scholarships for new PhD students starting in the academic year 2016/17.
These scholarships will be offered at the standard UK Research Council’s rate and administered under the Graduate Teaching Assistant Scheme, further details of which can be found at http://www.kent.ac.uk/scholarships/postgraduate/gta.html
- The scholarships cover full home/EU fees plus a maintenance grant and a salary which will total an amount equivalent to that offered by the Research Councils for 2016
- The scholarships will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance
- Recipients will be expected to undertake approximately four hours of teaching per week over the three years of the award
Criteria
The Vice Chancellor’s Research Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding applicants able to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, excellent communication skills, and the potential to make a strong contribution to their chosen field of research. Candidates must:
- Hold a good honours degree (First or 2.1) and a Master’s degree at merit or distinction in a relevant subject or equivalent
- Hold an offer of a place on a full-time doctoral research degree in the School of Arts for the academic year commencing September 2016
- Have a high-quality research proposal
- Be willing to develop teaching skill suited to our undergraduate programme with the support of their supervisors and the module convenors
- The Arts competition is open to UK, EU and overseas fee-paying students, however it should be noted that the award will only cover Home/EU fees

- It is strongly recommended that you contact the School Director of Graduate Studies to discuss your research proposal. If you already know the member of staff you wish to supervise your project, you should contact him or her directly.
- Candidates must make a formal application to study on a School of Arts doctoral programme, by 31 January 2016

Note that these scholarships are only open to new students. All unsuccessful CHASE applicants will be automatically considered for the Vice Chancellor’s Research Scholarships.
