What’s going on?

We’ve not had a blog post for a bit, so I thought that I would take this opportunity to let you know some of the things that the Web Development team are working on at the moment. This is just some of the things that are going on this week.

Employability points

The University is actively engaged in making its students more employable as they graduate. The team are working on a project to integrate the universities employability points scheme (a scheme where students get points for attending workshops etc) into our Personal Development Portfolio system Marhara.

Clearing

Its that time of year again, and as the University gears up for the flurry of activity that goes on at result time, the team will be providing support for the Clearing application system.

New web farm

We are about to start the process of migrating our content off of a single webserver and onto a farm of load-balanced shiny servers. There are a few things which the team are having to do in preparation of this, the main one being the deployment of the Pantheon templating engine.

We are working to improve the deployment process such that we can deploy, with ease and confidence, more often. This will mean that the publishers at the Uni will get the latest and greatest features even quicker than at the moment.

Kent on your mobile

An exciting time, we are set to start a sprint on the first round of Kent on your mobile. Currently there is an alpha running which shows PC availability on the Canterbury campus, some of the enhancements we hope to bring are:

  • geo-location on PC availability
  • campus map
  • news feeds
  • configuration information for various devices

This is merely a snapshot of what we are hoping to acheive.  There will be more posted on here as we progress.

Day to day

Along with these projects the team also carries out updates to our core web assets on a regular basis, such as wordpress, drupal, uPortal, as well as providing support for when something goes wrong.
