39th Annual Association for Behaviour Analysis International Conference (ABAI)

Jamie Hughes and Becky Hardiman,  PhD students at the Tizard Centre, attended the 39th Annual Association for Behaviour Analysis International (ABAI) Conference in Minneapolis, USA in May 2013.

Jamie, alongside Dr Gwen Dwiggins (Summit Autism Services) presented a workshop “24 language and learning barriers for children with autism: identification and intervention”. This aimed to provide an analysis of each barrier and potential intervention strategies that could be used to remove or reduce that barrier focusing on how to conduct descriptive and functional analyses of weak or impaired verbal behaviour using Skinner’s analysis. Research Study: The Early Start Denver Model for Toddlers with ASD

Jamie Hughes, PhD student at the Tizard, is looking to recruit participants to help with her research project.

What is the purpose of the study?
Previous research found that parents often say that they would like more information and some help to work with their child with autism spectrum disorder while they are undergoing the diagnostic process and/or after receiving the diagnosis. However, in the UK available help for families can be limited.

Inclusion Criteria: child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder
OR currently going through the diagnostic process, your child is between the ages of 12-48 months of age, and has no significant medical concerns.

The research will take place in South East England – Kent.

The ESDM is a comprehensive programme for children with autism. What that means, is that it covers all the developmental skills of early childhood. These include: language, play skills, social interaction, imitation, motor skills, self-care, and behaviour.

For further information please contact Jamie:  jh560@kent.ac.uk or call her on 01227 824770.

Kent University consolidates its position in the top 30

The University of Kent has been ranked 28th out of 124 UK institutions in the Complete University Guide 2014 – a rise of five places from last year.

This rise, combined with the University’s third place for overall satisfaction in the most recent National Student Survey (2012) and other recent league table achievements, including a ranking of 22nd in the 2013 Guardian University Guide and 28th in the Sunday Times League Table 2013, confirms Kent’s position in the top tier of UK universities.

David Nightingale, Kent’s Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: ‘Once again, this is excellent news for the University. Our league table positions, together with our reputation for research-led teaching and student experience, confirm that Kent is a first choice destination for prospective students.’

Launched in 2007, the Complete University Guide offers comparisons between UK universities on a wide range of criteria including strength of research, student satisfaction, entry standards, staff/student ratio, spending on academic services, campus facilities, completion rates, good honours and graduate prospects. Its full league tables can be viewed at www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/
