WiSEAN Conference 2024

By Leonie Charles

WiSEAN Conference, 26th-27th 2024, University of Portsmouth

Funding from the Technician Commitment Knowledge Exchange meant that I was lucky enough to attend the WiSEAN conference back in June.

The conference promotes an environment where knowledge was shared to encourage change for women in the sporting world. I attended a variety of talks hosted by range of speakers, from nutritionists to strength and conditioning experts. Each of which highlighted gaps in the research, addressed misconceptions or challenged ideology in the industry.

An evening social event at the Spinnaker Tower allowed me to have the opportunity to connect with academics, athletes, practitioners and students to discuss some of the topics we had touched upon during the day.

I came away from the conference with a lot to reflect on. Specifically as a technician, it made me consider the equipment and methods we use to test female participants and the potential considerations that may need to be taken into account when testing a female population. By passing this knowledge on to colleagues and students, I hope that we can produce better quality research. With these developments in mind, I look forward to the next conference!
