In the midst of National Apprenticeship Week, Ryan Morrow, Senior Technical Manager, has been awarded the prestigious title of Apprentice of the Year. This recognition underscores the significant value of apprenticeships, particularly for mature students who need to maintain an income to support their families.
Apprenticeships are not solely for those embarking on technical or hands-on roles. They are available at all career levels and span a wide range of fields, including business, social sciences, and more. This flexibility allows individuals to gain valuable skills and experience while continuing to earn a living.
For Ryan, the Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, delivered online by Kent Business School at the University of Kent, has been transformative. It has significantly contributed to his career development and played a pivotal role in his recent promotion. Additionally, the progression on the course has opened doors to gaining fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (HEA), further enhancing his professional credentials.
Reflecting on this achievement, Ryan stated, “This apprenticeship has been a game-changer for me. It has provided me with the skills and knowledge necessary to advance my career while allowing me to support my family. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities it has opened up.”
Ryan also shared some personal reflections on his journey: “Balancing work, studies, and family life has been challenging, but the support from my mentors and advisors has been invaluable. The apprenticeship has not only equipped me with professional skills but also taught me the importance of perseverance and time management. I have grown both personally and professionally, and I am excited about the future possibilities. Special thanks are extended to John Crook for his mentorship, Loreta Jarvis, the apprenticeship advisor, for keeping me focused, and to the academic support from Dr. Sideeq Mohammed and Dr. Trevor Gerhardt .”
John Crook commented, “Ryan’s commitment to both his professional and academic development has been outstanding. Throughout his apprenticeship, he has shown a keen ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application, improving both learning environments and the student experience. His engagement with teaching, mentoring, and technical education has been impressive, and his recognition as Apprentice of the Year is a fitting tribute to his hard work. From his leadership in developing technical skills training to his ongoing pursuit of excellence, Ryan exemplifies the kind of professional who truly makes a difference.”
Dr. Sideeq Mohammed, Director of Education at Kent Business School, remarked, “When this apprentice commenced his Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, he was new to a role and the programme provided him with an opportunity to structure his understanding of the new role in a new industry. Within a year, he had been promoted to Senior Manager. This promotion certainly resulted from the more reflective approach to leadership and management that the apprentice had acquired during his studies. This apprentice has displayed a disciplined and determined approach to his studies in spite of the pressure of his role while also maintaining good grades. In the last year, he was also successfully awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Once he has concluded his final year project in 2025, we have no doubt that he will also apply for a Senior Fellowship as he continually looks to develop himself personally and professionally. We are proud to recognize Ryan Morrow for his outstanding contributions and hard work!”
Reflecting further, Ryan encourages anyone considering further education or career advancement to explore apprenticeship opportunities: “I have seen first-hand how apprenticeships can be a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. They offer a unique blend of learning and earning that can open doors to new possibilities. Whether you are just starting out in your career or looking to advance to the next level, apprenticeships provide a structured pathway to gain practical experience and academic qualifications simultaneously. The flexibility of online delivery, as I experienced with Kent Business School, means you can balance your studies with work and family commitments. I urge anyone who is contemplating further education or career progression to seriously consider an apprenticeship. It has been a life-changing experience for me, and I believe it can be for many others as well.”
Ryan also highlighted the specific benefits for technicians in higher education: “For technicians in higher education, apprenticeships offer a unique opportunity to enhance technical skills and gain managerial expertise. This combination is invaluable for career development as it prepares individuals for leadership roles within their institutions. The apprenticeship has allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, improving my effectiveness in my current role and positioning me for future advancements. The support and recognition from the academic community have been instrumental in my journey, and I am confident that other technicians can similarly benefit from these programs.”
In conclusion, Ryan’s journey exemplifies how dedication to continuous learning and professional development through apprenticeships can lead to remarkable achievements and open doors to new opportunities. “If you are looking to advance your career, support your family, and achieve your professional goals, consider an apprenticeship. It could be the key to unlocking your potential and achieving success.
