Depression Awareness Week: Our Soundtrack to Depression

The 20th to 26th April 2015 is Depression Awareness Week.

Depression is an illness that is so vastly misunderstood and can sometimes be very hard to understand unless you have been there. Sometimes it is impossible to put into words the feelings and thoughts that occur when you are depressed but every so often we find that a musician manages to put into words what we simply cannot describe.

As our own contribution to raising awareness of depression, we have decided to compile a ‘Soundtrack to Depression’ which features the songs which our members and the general twitter population have nominated to help describe what it is like to have depression.

We hope that by having a listen to our soundtrack, you can better your understanding of what someone who has depression might be feeling and altogether help to create a depression-aware society.

If you would like to contribute to the soundtrack then please tweet us @unikentsssn or email studentsocialsupportnetwork@kent.ac.uk

Our ‘Soundtrack to Depression’

1. The Lonely by Christina Perri

“Never before have a found a song that so perfectly describes the loneliness that walks hand in hand with depression and this can be the most crippling part of it. It describes the helplessness, the battle between your thoughts and your actions, the distress that comes with the inability to pick yourself up. If you know someone who has depression then don’t let them feel alone in it.”

Lyric Highlight: “I’m the ghost of a girl that I want to be most. I’m the shell of a girl that I used to know well.”

2. Dark Side by Kelly Clarkson

“Often Depression is seen as ‘dark side’ of a person. We need to remember that Depression does not define a person, they are not a depressed person. Depression is an illness that can be overcome.”

Lyric Highlight: “So don’t give up on me. Please remind me who I really am”

3. Imagine by John Lennon

“For a moment, just imagine a world without suffering; a world without the things that cause depression – abuse, violence, death, war, greed. Imagine a world without Depression.”

Lyric Highlight: Imagine there’s no countries; It isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for…
